I probably won't have to tell you this, but the Seiko 6217-8000/8001, aka 62MAS, was Seiko's very first professional diver's watch in 1965. It's the predecessor of all those magnificent Seiko divers that followed, and that's exactly why it's still such a desirable watch today. Over the past few years, we've seen quite a few Seiko.

This model, which again was reference 6217-8000, was only in production for three months before Seiko upgraded to the 6217-8001. Large Crown vs. Small Crown The 6217-8001 version of the 62MAS has some small differences from its precursor, the main one being that it had a much bigger crown.

The first version of the 62MAS, with the small crown and reference 6217-8000, was produced for a very short period, which is assumed to be only three months: April, May and June of 1965. The improved version, with the larger crown and reference 6217-8001, was produced for a longer period and in greater quantities, so it is easier to find.

As we already said, the 62MAS was released in 1965 under the commercial reference 62MAS-010, but it's better known under the classical Seiko reference 6217-8000 (the first 4 digits for the movement, the 4 others for the case number). It was originally made by Suwa but we will come back later on this point.

As commonly known the first real diver from Seiko was the 62MAS (6217-8000) that was released in 1965. This watch is commonly associated with the ZLM01 waffle strap but the watch was never sold with this strap. All of the official period photos of the 62MAS show the watch on a Tropic style strap.
